Is that an ad in your pocket? That’s what Folio asked in its May 1, 2003 issue: “Most magazines put advertisements on their second, third, and back covers. Prevention, the digest-size title from Rodale, has been putting an ad inside its cover – and it was the front cover at that. That’s right, we said inside.”

Folio recognizes Jerry Westcott, VP, Direct Marketing Services for Concord Litho, as the creator of the CoverSleeve concept. Westcott has developed a paper pocket with a small perforated tab that permits ad pages to be held inside the front cover. “It occurred to me,” Westcott says, “that this might be a cool way to generate some ad revenue.”

Generating ad revenue is exactly what the CoverSleeve has been doing for Rodale since it began using it in July 2002. A Prevention study showed that 70% of readers remember the CoverSleeve, pull it out, and interact with it.
